This is an absolutely outstanding article by Michael Rosen, late of the Harvard government department, on what might be termed “The Washington Doctrine” and its relevance to today’s foreign policy. Set in the context of a review of John Ellis’ outstanding new Washington biography His Excellency, Rosen corrects some myths and brings Washington forward in a way few have in the modern debate (wherein the pre-9/11 Buchananite A Republic Not An Empire view has largely gone unquestioned). Buchanan certainly makes good points; but Rosen’s are most enlightening, and this article is well worth your time.
