Slavery was the great moral evil of another time. Abortion is the great moral evil of our time.
The Dobbs ruling is like the Emancipation Proclamation: both glorious and incomplete, better than many had dared to hope for and also the best we can get right now. But not forever.
But both the evils of slavery and of abortion are likely to end, in part, in the same 14th Amendment, the Due Process Clause of which states that “No person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law.”
Those words already banned abortion, in 1868.
Now, post-Dobbs, it’s our job to pass enough statutes declaring the unborn child a person that this Constitutional provision must be enforced appropriately in most, and ultimately all, of the United States.
As Wilberforce spent half his life working to ban the slave trade, and built upon that victory to spend the second half of his life banning slavery itself, our fight now likewise begins.
