My good friend David Jeffers wrote the following in response to news of the upcoming closed-door meeting with Donald Trump and key Evangelical leaders on June 21 in New York (Sherri and I are among those attending). There is much wisdom in what he writes. — RDM

Advice to the Christian Leaders Meeting With Donald Trump

by David Jeffers
May 24, 2016

Dear Friends,

I know you’re about to embark on a mission you no doubt never expected. This meeting with Trump is not by chance as you already know. It is a divine appointment even if Trump initiated it.

He may be realizing the enormity of what is before him. Then again, and just as likely, it could be to manipulate evangelical leaders into his fray. Only God knows.

But what we do know is what Christ has taught us:

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10:15)

I know you’ve dealt in this arena and have seen things I’ve only read of. However, I feel a real burden for you as you go to meet with Trump. I pray that he will see his need for Christ by being among all of you.

That happened to my brother Stephen the night after my son Eddie was killed. One day after Eddie’s funeral at our church, Stephen went forward to give his life to Christ and I had the blessed honor to lead him to Christ.

That night after everyone had left, I asked him what he thought of my friends. He said he needed friends like that. As I write this I am reminded of Paul telling the Corinthian church:

“To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things?” (Two Corinthians 2:16 – Donald’s favorite book in the Bible…sorry I couldn’t help myself).

The aroma in my house in the midst of such great loss was the aroma of life. That led to my beloved baby brother coming to Christ. Three and half years later my brother was in heaven, so unexpectedly but so wonderfully having witnessed the Holy Spirit’s powerful touch on his life.

I pray that same aroma fills the meeting room with Donald.

But you are lambs among wolves, and in this case among a particularly cunning and manipulative wolf. Be cautious dear friends. Do not be enticed. Trust your biblical wisdom and wits to maintain clarity. I’ll be praying that for all the attendees.

In that light, and you may have already read Steve Deace’s column, “Dear Christian Leaders, You’re Playing a Very Dangerous Game,” but I ask you to read it and consider it seriously. I’m not asking you to embrace it in its entirety, just in light of what I’ve shared with you.

What he has written has struck a huge nerve in the Christian community. It is worthy of our consideration and prayer. I’m glad he wrote it because it shows that he is sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s prompting.

May the Lord abundantly and richly bless you two. You are Ambassadors for Christ and you have been given this mantle for such a time as this.

In Christ,
Dave
