The EU Has Blown It: Even Labour Now Prefers a Trade Deal With America
The bloc must tear up its post-Brexit script or risk letting the US swoop in and carry Britain away.
NOTE: While President Trump speaks of acquiring Greenland, re-acquiring the Panama Canal, and…something with Canada, of far greater interest is a potential shift of Great Britain into the North American trade bloc (something I’ve been agitating for since the 1990s).
Such a development might portend a greater opportunity, and one Trump is likely hinting at in his comments on Canada: a true free trade area encompassing the entire Anglosphere. The five great English-speaking powers are already allies (in multiple dimensions), already close trading partners, and would all be greatly enriched by even closer ties.
I am most assuredly NOT here proposing what Phyllis Schlafly used to call a North American Union, in the European sense. She was right, that would be wrong, and the EU model has utterly failed (as this essay expounds). But a true free trade bloc would make the Anglosphere globally dominant.
It all…
