As I read two things came to mind: The Frankfurt School / Herbert Marcuse and the concept of "repressive tolerance."
It was something that kept coming to mind 2020-present as we watched Antifa / BLM run rampant, with at a minimum tacit support from the government (Chris Wray dismissing Antifa as "just an idea" and DOJ deliberately not prosecuting), as contrasted against the treatment of the J6 protestors, who were outright persecuted.
Also, this from Winston Churchill: "“The farther back you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.”
