Congress returns to work after the elections for a lame duck session that already has numerous items on its agenda. Government funding expires on December 7, several statutes must be reauthorized or extended, and House and Senate leaders have committed to funding President Trump’s border wall.
We ask that the Congress focus on four very specific action items.
Fully fund a border wall. For two years, Congress has failed to address the crisis at the border – one made all the more urgent as thousands of migrants surge toward the U.S. with the intent to cross. House and Senate leaders have made encouraging comments about considering a border wall as part of a funding package in December, and we urge them to follow through. Specifically, they should provide $25 billion for a border wall system, ports of entry/exit, northern border improvements and enhancements, and end “catch-and-release.”
Do not provide amnesty as part of a border wall deal. Conservatives have long opposed amnesty for illegal immigrations out of respect for the rule of law, respect for legal immigrants, and the incentive it provides for further illegal immigration. Our opposition will not be muted simply because Congress funds a border wall. Moreover, it is nonsensical to pass wall funding to deter illegal immigration while agreeing to an amnesty that will only incentivize it. This lame duck Congress should not pass amnesty.
No deal on spending caps. This Congress has managed to spend far and above the spending caps conservatives passed in 2011, and well above what President Trump requested in his budget submission. Any attempt to cut a caps deal in the lame duck which enshrines higher spending into law is firmly opposed by conservatives.
Confirm the remaining judges before adjournment. The Senate Republican leadership has done yeoman’s work in confirming two Supreme Court justices and a host of appellate judges. However, over one hundred vacancies still exist on the federal courts, and 72 judges are still pending confirmation in the Senate. We urge the Republican majority to confirm these judges before closing out the session in December.
